How Much Does It Cost to Line a Sewer Pipe?

Verify before you rely on this guide. This is general educational information, current as of October 11, 2026. Codes, permit rules, fees, prices, product warranties and industry practices change, and every property is different. You must confirm up-to-date information with the City of Pasadena or your local building authority, a licensed plumbing or sewer contractor, and the sources listed in this guide before making any decision.

Nothing in this guide is a price quote. Costs vary widely by property and change over time; only a current written estimate based on an on-site inspection reflects pricing for your job.

The cost of sewer pipe lining is determined by the length and condition of the line and what the crew must do before, during, and after installation. Our approved research does not establish current, representative Pasadena residential dollar figures, so a confident local “average cost per foot” would be misleading.

What exactly does a lining quote buy?

Cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP) installs and cures an interior liner within a suitable existing pipe. A complete proposal may include camera inspection, cleaning, measuring, liner material, crew equipment, curing, reopening connections, verification, permits, and restoration of access points.

That is a different service from a drain cleaning or a full excavation-based replacement. When two contractors describe different tasks, their headline prices may not be comparable.

Which parts of the pipe make lining more complicated?

Length and diameter affect the amount and specification of liner needed. Bends, pipe transitions, branch connections, and limited cleanout access can change how it is installed. Corrosion scale, root masses, or debris can require preparation and reinspection.

Where a section is severely crushed, offset, or missing, lining may not be possible as proposed. A contractor may need direct access and a spot repair first, or may recommend replacement instead. Ordinary lining also follows the old grade, so a documented belly is not solved simply by installing a smoother pipe within the dip.

For the full technical sequence, see how sewer lining works.

What an itemized proposal should show

Line item What to confirm
Diagnosis Pre-work camera, cleaning, location and measurements
Preparation Root removal, descaling, obstructions, spot corrections
Liner Repair endpoints, diameter, system and intended application
Installation Access method, resin system, curing process
Connections Number and method of branch reinstatements
Verification Post-work CCTV and other specified acceptance steps
Site costs Access pits, permits, flow management and restoration
Exclusions What happens if another defect is found

You don't necessarily need every task billed separately, but you should know which tasks are included and which trigger an additional charge.

Why a cost-per-foot number is incomplete

A short run may still involve mobilization, cleaning, and access work. A longer clear run might have fewer connection complications than a shorter one with several bends and blocked cleanouts. A per-foot figure does not account for those differences, nor does it define concrete and landscaping restoration.

Ask each contractor for the actual length and endpoints on the video or project sketch. If one quote includes more footage, request the evidence for treating the extra section.

Is lining cheaper than replacement?

Not always. Lining may avoid expensive surface restoration where the pipe runs beneath hardscape. A short, reachable section in open soil might be simpler to replace directly. If the host pipe cannot accept a liner without substantial preliminary repair, the trenchless advantage may shrink.

Compare two technically feasible plans with the same level of repair and restoration. The excavation comparison examines the tradeoffs. The broader trenchless cost guide includes pipe bursting.

What about lifespan and warranties?

Long design-life discussions do not determine the value of your particular quote. The chosen liner system, installation quality, remaining pipe geometry, connections, and actual warranty terms matter. Do not treat “50 years” as a universal guarantee.

Ask for the written material and workmanship warranty, exclusions, transfer conditions, and who pays for access if a covered repair is needed. See the lining longevity guide.

How should you compare two estimates?

Give both companies the same inspection information, and ask what defects they intend to treat. Compare the liner length, cleaning, access, branch work, post-installation proof, and restoration. Confirm who handles current Pasadena permits if applicable, and ask for written change-order rules.

When a quote needs a second look

A proposal may sound comprehensive because it lists a long liner, yet omit the preparation needed for a heavily scaled cast-iron host. If adequate cleaning is not possible, the liner installation itself may be impractical.

Another proposal may offer a short liner for one crack without examining a downstream offset that is responsible for repeated backups. Even a perfectly installed patch may leave the main symptom unresolved.

Ask for the before-camera video and marked lining limits, then confirm what was found immediately before and after that reach. The quality of a lining quote is partly the quality of its problem definition. Be cautious if the bidder describes a warranty without providing a written form, or if the price assumes no restoration but access pits are visible on the plan.

Bottom line: The cheapest looking lining quote may exclude the expensive preparation; the higher one may include work you don't need. Clear evidence and equal scopes beat a generic price chart.
